How Automobiles Work


This is the Nissan Qashqai. You may already
know, but if you don’t, it’s the car that single handedly started an enormous SUV boom
in the UK back in 2007. Things are very different now, and there are
a lot more cars battling it for sales like the Skoda Karoq and Seat Ateca. This is the
second-generation Qashqai, and it already had a facelift in 2017, but it’s just had another
refresh before it’s replaced entirely in 2020, and these are the new changes. And remember if you want to buy a Qashqai

to speed with the latest new car reviews please subscribe to our channel. The latest Qashqai gets a brand new 1.3-litre
petrol engine available in two states of tune – and that means the 1.2-litre and 1.6-litre
options have been ditched. For the first time in a Qashqai you can now
also get a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, as you can see this is a manual. And inside, there’s a new infotainment system
running Nissan’s latest Nissan Connect technology. The infotainment system has never been the
Qashqai’s strong point, and right now its competition is strong in this area. This is an area where the Qashqai has been
improved, although not by much. So every model apart from entry level Visia gets this 7.0in
touchscreen, but you can see just by scrolling through the options on the homepage it’s
quite slow and laggy, And if we go into the map you wouldn’t exactly call it 4K definition.
All the pinch and zoom functions are just a bit slow to respond to touch and it’s
generally just nowhere near as slick, precise, and reactive as a smart phone screen or a
tablet. However there are other infotainment systems that do feel much crisper than this,
and certainly the graphics are something that really lets the side down here a bit. But
it’s good that you have these shortcut buttons on the side of the Qashqai’s screen because
lots of competitors have a purely touch screen solution for their infotainment. As we
know they are a bit difficult to operate on the move. So It’s helpful that you’ve
got these buttons on the side. But another good thing with this infotainment system is
that if you have this touch screen then you get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
And another great thing about it is that it can update its software and it’s maps over
the air wirelessly, so you don’t have to visit a dealer to update your infotainment
system. Elsewhere inside the quality is actually pretty
impressive. There are plenty of soft dense materials especially on the dashboard. But you don’t have to look very hard to find some cheaper stuff, there are some scratchy plastics
down here on the drivers door. But the buttons all feel reasonable quality and the dials
too are all ok. So overall the quality in the Qashqai is about the same as what you
get in the Ateca, but it’s still the Karoq that leads the way for quality in this class
at this price point anyway, but which do you think looks best? Well click on the banner

hold you in place better through corners, and the driving position generally is very
good, there is loads of adjustment in the steering wheel and in the seat as well. But
what’s especially good about the seats is the adjustable lumbar support comes as standard
from everything above entry level Visia trim. Front space is good, but be careful if you
get a panoramic sunroof then it significantly cuts into headroom, it’s still ok but if
you’re especially tall then it could be a problem. Likewise legroom is good but other cars offer
a bit more. But where the Qashqai is good in
the front is the number of storage options that you have. The door pockets are a bit
on the small side, and you have got loads of different compartments to choose from. You’ve
got a couple of cup holders here, you’ve got this kind of phone and wallet thing in front
of the centre console right here, and just underneath the dashboard you’ve got another
storage compartment, but this one is a bit of a pain because it’s got a twelve volt
socket and if you’re using it, it cuts into the space quite a lot, so that’s not hugely
practical. But what is very good is this storage compartment in the centre console is absolutely
massive, I can basically fit my whole arm down there. You have got another twelve volt
socket as well as a USB input and an aux input as well. The back of the Qashqai is reasonably roomy
by family SUV standards with lots of headroom except for models with panoramic sunroofs,
making it a lot more restricted but just about manageable for an adult. There is lots of
knee and leg room as well, it’s about on par with a Skoda Karoq. The seats aren’t particularly clever though.
They fold down, but they don’t slide forwards or backwards, and they don’t recline either.
They fold in a 60/40 configuration, rather than the more versatile 40/20/40 which some
rivals get. You don’t even get ‘remote’ handles in the boot to lower the seat backs.
Plus, the Karoq even lets you remove the rear seats completely. The boot has more than enough room for a weekly
shop, or a couple of sets of golf clubs. But a Karoq’s is much bigger. What is good about
the Qashqai is that it gets a false boot floor, and that’s as standard on all trims apart
apart from entry-level Visia. That means, you can lift up the front
half and put it down so it acts as a divider which means if you put all your shopping bags
in the back and drive around a corner particularly quickly it won’t all go flying all over
the place. It gives you the added flexibility of being able to change the floor to make
it even deeper… Like that. But how does the Qashqai stack up financially?
These are the key things you need to know about buying and owning a Nissan Qashqai. If you’re buying with cash, the Qashqai
is cheaper to buy outright than an the Ateca and Karoq. The Qashqai is also really cheap for companies
choosing to lease, but it loses its value quite quickly – quicker than an Ateca and
Karoq. In fact – the Qashqai’s depreciation means
that it’s more expensive to run over three years than those rivals. Reliability also isn’t great for the Qashqai.
In our latest reliability survey, it finished second bottom in the family SUV class. Acenta Premium is our recommended trim, because
it adds 17in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, automatic lights and wipers, and touchscreen
infotainment. Entry level Visia trim is cheap – but it misses out on lots of kit. We can certainly see why you’d be tempted
by N-Connecta – which is the trim we’ve got here – and adds privacy glass, bigger
wheels and keyless entry. You get more safety kit, too. The quality of the reversing camera is particularly
poor as well, it looks like i am in a health and safety video from 1994. Six airbags come as standard as well as a system called emergency brake assist, what that does if
in an emergency you put the brakes on but the car thinks you haven’t put them
on quite hard enough, it will put them on extremely hard for you. But while there are
lots of active safety systems available, they’re only optional on lower trims. But, what’s
the facelifted Qashqai like to drive? Let’s cut to the chase. This 138bhp 1.3-litre
petrol engine is the best choice in the lineup. Why? Well It’s brisk enough, but actually
the most impressive thing about it is how easily it builds speed from low revs, so it
just gives you really flexible performance in any gear really. It’s very impressive
when you think of the previous 1.2 litre petrol engine which was really gutless. There’s also a 158bhp version of the same
engine, but really the difference in pace isn’t hugely noticeable in day-to-day use,
so we’d still recommend the lower powered version. Unless, you plan on using the Qashqai
to tow, or if you want the new automatic gearbox – which is smooth and impressive. This manual
has quite a long throw and doesn’t feel as slick as an Ateca’s. High-mileage drivers have a choice of two
diesels – a 1.5-litre and 1.7-litre. But we’d stick with the petrols. The Qashqai is generally not quite as agile
as an Ateca and Karoq, and they are both more fun to drive, too. The handling of the Qashqai
is safe and secure along a twisting country road, and it’s easy to manage in town. But just how comfortable the Qashqai is depends
pretty much entirely on what size wheel you go for, this is very important if you go for
the 17in alloys then this is one of the most comfortable cars in the class but if you go
for the bigger 18in alloys, which you might think look more flash and interesting, the
ride starts to deteriorate and just feel quite a lot firmer. And then if you go up for the
blingest 19in alloys then the ride really becomes too firm to recommend. So we would
definitely say clear from those bigger alloys and even if they might not look quite so swish,
we stick with the smaller ones instead. So the Nissan Qashqai might not be the champion
of family SUVs that it once was, but it remains a very good proposition. On the right wheels
it’s one of the most comfortable cars in the class, and the new lineup of engines impress.

  2. This is very nice compared to Nissan offerings in the USA. I find it unfortunate that Nissan offers conventional automatic and manual transmissions in other markets, while offering only CVT in the US.

  3. Can’t understand why can’t they stick an iPad or any other Android tablet on the car.. we have buttery smooth navigation for almost a decade now and still all the cars have stupid infotainment system!!!

  4. Wow.. that engine looks horrendous.. they should have at least put a cover on it!! So bad headroom, worse info system, cheap plastics, avg boot, worst reliability … did I miss anything else .. and it still is the top selling suv in UK!!!

I had the mark one qashqai 1.6 petrol for nearly 10 years and it never let me down but was put off by the shocking unreliability of the mark 2 version so i traded my mark one qashqai for a skoda karoq i was one over by the sheer quality of the car and the way it drives it hasn't got the bells and whistles of the Peugeot 3008 but it's a better car .

  6. I had the first facelift model ( 2010) for three years and have to say it was a brilliant car, never had a problem with it. I really wanted to not like it as i didnt like the dealer but couldnt fault it

  7. I currently have a 2016 1.2 tekkna and going to trade it in this year to a Audi A3. The info display is not that great on the qashqai. Am downgrading in size but not in price . The batteries on my 2016 qashqai is not great and I had to buy another one last year .

  9. I went from QASHQAI to 2018 xtrail Tekna. What a great car. 1.6 turbo. 164hp and manual. Interior looks amazing in that orange brown leather. QASHQAI is too common these days. They are everywhere. I also owned a skyline gtr from Nissan.

  11. had one on hire….. its a Renault basically the gearbox and engine are French but your paying so called Japanese parts prices, coupled with cheap Japanese switchgear rubbish rear view camera cheap 1999 style interior. tinny noise from the door and door handles rubbish boot its smaller than a small hatch. no thanks

  12. How often do you really see someone touching the dashboard and say oooh this is so soft and premium?
    And also, why is it so important that a cheap car has to feel premium? If you want a premium car, buy one instead!

  13. Nothing but issues with our 2018 Qashqai. With in a week of collecting it from the dealer, it went back in with an AdBlu error. We finally got it back 5 weeks later but we still have issues, including random stalling and power issues. Also random power drops meant we were left out in front of traffic and have almost been hit a few times. I won't even mention the auto braking randomly kicking in from time to time. Will be the last one for us, this is number 3..

  14. Don’t be fooled by the badge on the front – just because it’s Japanese doesn’t mean it’s going to be reliable, because ever since Renault merged with Nissan in March 1999, Nissans haven’t been as reliable as they used to be before the merger…

  15. i've had a 2016 quashqai 1.6l diesel/ 4wd for a few years now, as a petrol head this car was never ment to imrpress me and was bought as an instrument for the home.. a soulless family car that serves it purpose. and it does brilliantly, but i must say that it has surprised me a bit how well tuned the suepension is, driven down a country road it really can handle it self and has a somewhat sporty charakter,

Owner of a 2017 Qashqai, if your thinking of buying a qashqai ill tell you right now DONT, maybe im one of the unlucky ones but in 1,5 Years i had 40 visits to the dealer, faulty main car computer, faulty radar, faulty plastic components (popped off after 2 months, had to replace the rear plastic trim), way too sensitive parktronic as in a spec of dust makes it think your about to collide, and make the hole system go nuts, and so mutch fun while driving to be startled by a loud signal from the parktronic, the suspension feels hard, i had cars 10+ years older that were way more softer, also if you hear any sounds coming from your suspension forget about the warranty because sounds coming from the suspension are not covered by warranty according to the dealer, the electrical system is so good that you get nice disco show every morning when you start the car all the lights start to flicker and according to Nissan it should be like this, and even after 40+ visits i couldn't return the car even if i wanted to because we here in Europe dont have the lemon law like the american's 🙁 well this concludes my rant, save your self the trouble and buy anything else but the Nissan qashqai, Hope this heals atleast someone evade the trouble im having with my QashQai 🙂

  17. Best features in the Qasqai are the bake up camaera and top down parking assistance camera. Very useful when parking and manoeuvring around tight areas. I reviewed one myself on my channel, mine must have been the pre facelift version as I had a different infotainment system to the one you drove.

  20. I have had three qashqais which I have been very pleased with latest on 1.5 diesel bought new two years ago only trouble i have had is a battery which was replaced free of charge. 50 to the gallon free road tax lovely car very pleased indeed

  21. I've got a 2016 x-trail tekna. Had no problems with it exept for a dead battery which is normal and breaks only now being changed. Very good car. The qashqui you have in the video is the acenta or the acenta premium. The n- connector comes with 2 tone wheels, partial leather seats. Way more stuff

  22. it's a toy compared to ssangyong (been testing both). will we get a chance to see some review? I like your review and hope it could help me to persuade my common sense, which suggest buying more comfortable, spacious, robust family car saving half price.

I had a 65 plate 1.6dci tekna, absolute LEMON reliability , 4 sat nav units, 2 driver seat bases, cameras kept going out of calibration, Milton Keynes Nissan dealer lied to me about replacing the seat and had to complain to Nissan H/O who couldn’t be bothered if they tried. Terrible road noise and wind noise. Pan roof was fixed and didn’t open. Will never get another one. Peugeot 3008 is a far better SUV.

    Worst driven cars in the UK .
    I’m a trucker and have to put up with them 5 days a week.

  27. I don’t agree with you that the earlier 1.2 engine is gutless. It delivers more power than the 1.6 engine in the first version. Apart from that nice video.

  28. Have a 2015 acenta model , bought it in January 2015, 1,6 dci xtronic. In 5 years only battery drained once and it was replaced by a warranty. Since then no even one problem with it so far. I can say this is a good car for a value, especially new model could be now with little improvements on infotainment and steering wheel.

    I have a qashqai 2012 model and I can honestly say that I've never had so many problems with a car in my 36 years of driving. They should hand you a manual for the amount of common problems this vehicle has.
    I think it's been deliberately built for parts to break. I'm approaching the £3000.00 marker on repairs and there is a whole lot more to do which I will have to try and do myself.
    I can't afford this mountain of repairs needing done.

  31. why would someone purchase a product or service knowing beforehand your product or service will dramatically drop in value once the purchase is made, buying a new car does not make sense, buy used and save mucho dinero

  32. The Qashqai is great car for everyday use, no problems expect clearing internal condensation from the front windscreen in winter months.

  33. I had a 2019 Qashqai the other day as a hire car for work. It was loaded with kit, very comfy and handled well but the peddle position was awful. I have size 8 feet which could not fit on the floor and manage the clutch which I can in pretty much every car I have driven, also the electronic parking brake was awful and for those reasons I wouldn't buy one. Plus the infotainment system was too complicated and I didn't like it. Fundamentally its a very good car, but not for me though.

  34. Wow what a dog…. 1.3litre engine…. Okay it's a very small SUV but even still that engine will die before 100K miles. A dual clutch auto with Nissan/Renault reliability ? Oh dear…. Not a problem for all those lease deal motorists but avoid like hell second hand.. Nissan (thanks to Renault) now have a poor reliability compared to good marques like Toyota or the better Honda models….
    2wd, poorer handing, less economy, no extra space.. Why bother with this?

  35. 1.5 dCi 2WD from 2015 – bought 15 months ago with 60.000 km on it. 75.000 km later, only 2 oil and filter changes, not a single disappointment from the car, best buy I've ever made. Recommended to anyone interested in a reliable, economical and a nice looking car.

  36. We have one of these in Australia, December 2018 built, the only engine we have is the 2 litre 4 cylinder petrol. The brakes all went within 2000 kms, never had any issue with any car in the past with brakes (Runout) had the 4 rotors changed under warranty.
    I’ve had over 200,000 kms out of brakes on prior cars.
    I live in dead flat Nth Qld, no hills or heavy braking.
    We had a 2013 Nissan Pulsar turbo 1.6, this is the Renault engine car. Don’t know if this car was available in the UK, might be under the tilda nameplate? After ownership of the Qashqui for a few months. Feeling buying this car was more of a downgrade than upgrade.
