How Automobiles Work

You know what an excess insurance policy is? Would you like to learn what that is? Come join me as I share with you this great
information. Hi. I’m Gerry Oginski. I’m a New York medical malpractice and car
accident trial attorney practicing law here in the state of New York. Now with a car insurance policy, an excess
policy means that you have a policy of insurance that is over and above what your basic policy
is. Now if you were a doctor and you had $1.3
million dollars in insurance coverage, most of the time you’re going to also have an excess
insurance policy. That means you’re going to have a policy of
insurance over and above the $1.3 million dollars. Typically, it will be for a total of $3.9
million dollars. And why do people have excess insurance? They do that to protect themselves. To make sure that if they are found responsible,
as a result of their carelessness, and the injuries that they caused are over and above
what the insurance policy limits are for that basic insurance policy now the excess insurance
kicks in so anything above that number now will be covered by the excess insurance. So why do I share this information with you? I share it with you just to give you an insight
and an understanding that when you bring a lawsuit seeking compensation for the harms
and losses you suffered — whether it’s a car accident case, whether it’s a medical
malpractice case in New York — one of the key things that we as attorneys look for is
to see what is the available insurance for the car? What’s the available insurance that the doctor
has? Does he have a professional corporation that
also has separate insurance? Maybe the professional corporation has excess
insurance. The driver of the car, do they have a homeowner’s
policy? If they do have a homeowner’s policy, there
may be a policy of excess insurance over and above whatever policy limits that they have. So it’s critical when you suffer an injury
because of somebody else’s carelessness, to determine how much insurance they have and
whether or not there’s excess insurance to be able to cover the injuries if your injuries
are significant or permanent or disabling. So you know I recognize you have questions
or concerns about your own particular matter. And if your matter happened here in New York
and you do have legal questions, what I encourage you to do is pick up the phone and call me. This is something that I do every single day
and I welcome your call. You can reach me at 516-487-8207 or by email
at [email protected] Well that’s it for today’s quick video. I’m Gerry Oginski, have a wonderful day!
