How Automobiles Work

It’s a really good idea to buy a set of
jumper cables and have them handy in your cargo area, just in case. Now if you
don’t, you can find a passerby who has a set and is willing to help you. Now
before doing anything it’s a good idea to put your vehicles in park, shut off
the ignition, and a good practice as well to set the emergency brake. Okay to get
started we’re going to attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal of
the dead battery. Now it usually has a + and is slightly bigger than the negative
terminal. Attach the other positive red clip to the positive terminal of the
good battery. Take the black clip and attach it to the good battery on the
negative terminal, and last take the last black clip and attach it to a metal
surface of the vehicle that’s nowhere near the battery on the dead vehicle. Now
we can start the good vehicle and just let it run for a few minutes. Okay after
running the good vehicle for just a few minutes we’re now going to try to start
the dead battery vehicle. Success! Now if it doesn’t start on the
first try you’re going to want to let the good battery vehicle run for at
least five minutes before trying again. Keep in mind that if the dead battery
still won’t start after five minutes of charging from the good vehicle it’s
probably time to get a new battery. Remember if the jumpstart works don’t
turn off your car, let it run, but we’re going to disconnect the terminals in the
reverse order. Now it’s a really good idea to take your vehicle out for a
drive for at least 20 minutes. Let’s put the cables back. You’ll want to remember
too that the next time you go to start your vehicle if it doesn’t turn over and
doesn’t start it may be time to put that battery on a trickle charger or it may
need to be replaced.
